Magic in the Creature Realm (reworked)
In the Creature Realm, every living being has magic. However, in different types of creatures it is expressed differently. Creatures like the Sylph and Critter species are able to harness this magic and use it to their advantage. A Beast's magic is part of them and is often used to hunt or defend. A Monster's magic only corrupts others to create more monsters. Beasts and Monsters do not need to learn how to use their magic because it is essential to their life, but Sylph and Critter species do. Critter species must sustain an injury from the same type of magic that they have, which can be tricky. Sylph species are born with their magic and only need time to show it.
There is an old trick to figure out what type of magic a Critter has. Go to a spot where shadow touches light. Whichever side you feel drawn to the most determines your magic's category. If you pick the light, then you have life magic. If you choose the side in shadow, then you have destruction magic. If you feel compelled to be in the middle, keep moving between light and dark, or can't decide, then you have chaos magic. From there, it's just a matter of trial and error to see what kind of magic you have. To activate your magic, you must come into contact with it but cannot seek it out yourself. Once your magic has been activated, you must have a strong will to prevent it from consuming you. If you let the magic consume you, then you become a wraith, set to wander the earth for all eternity and attack everyone in sight. Many Critters have either forgotten about their magic or are too afraid to take the risk of becoming a wraith to seek out their magic.
Magic falls into three categories: life, destruction, and chaos
The life magic types are: healing, restoration, plant, water, light =Druid
The destruction magic types are: decay, fire, earth, ice =Scorcerer
The chaos magic types are: lightning, shadow, dark lightning, resurection/necromancy =Wytch
Leviathininan magic has no category and is the most unstable magic in the Creature Realm. Almost nothing is known about it other than the fact that it is so rare that even the Sylph species (who are knowledgeable in magic) don't know what it is.

The dragons still exist...
Back when humans coexisted with dragons, dragons possessed the ability to shapeshift. They could change the appearance of their scales to resemble anything else and even alter their bodies. This trait came in handy when the humans' expansion forced dragons into hiding. For an ability as powerful as this, it was actually quite rare to have. A dragon could only pass down this ability in its true form, and it has to come from both parents. As dragons began breeding with other creatures in their various animal forms, this ability became rarer and rarer until only a handful of dragons still possessed it. They became known as "Ancients" to the Sylph and "Elementals" to the Critters. These "ancients" are largely unknown due to their reclusive nature. Dragons are still commonplace, but the vast majority of them no longer posses the ability to speak or transform. They are still able to communicate with each other using grunts, growls, body language, and various other noises.

What happened to the dragons?
Humans and dragons used to live side by side. As the centuries passed, humans occupied more and more of the territory dragons needed to thrive. In order to survive, some began to disguse themselves as humans while others disgused themselves as ordinary animals. When they bred with other creatures, their offspring would have draconic traits. Soon, there were so many dragons in hiding that when two accidentally bred, they created new dragons with traits of whatever they were hiding as. This is how the Draconii species began and how Mazacoatl was born. As he grew, he saw his kind be persecuted by the humans. With rage welling up inside him, he couldn't hide anymore. He unleashed a terrible magic that infected and corrupted every last living thing, including himself. The effects of the corruption are unknown, but legends say that it caused the monsters humans feared to become reality. And with the humans gone, the dragons were free to breed with whatever they wanted, however they wanted, spawning all the different species in the Creature Realm today.
