Bubba Watson says he'll quit if he ever gets to World No. 1

It'll be interesting to see if this actually happens, because Bubba Watson might not realize how real a possibility him getting to World No. 1 actually is. After his three-shot win at the Hero World Challenge on Sunday, Bubba revealed in his victory press conference that he'd retire if he ever made it to the top of the mountain.

"I will give you this, though. If I ever become No. 1 in the world -- ever, somehow -- I'm walking away. I'm walking away on top. But let's be honest, nobody here's voting on that, right? Everybody thinks I'm not going to do that."

He's right: Nobody would think he would actually do that, mostly because no one has ever done it before. But the thing is Bubba reaching World No. 1 is a serious possibility (he's ranked fourth right now behind Jordan Spieth, Jason Day and Rory McIlroy).

Those three have opened a gap on the rest of the field, admittedly, but under golf's current world ranking system, gaps much larger than that can close relatively quickly. Just look at the landscape this time last year: Rory safely secured in the top spot after winning two majors the previous season, while Day and Spieth were ranked eighth and ninth, respectively.

And in some ways Bubba has more room to grow than the other three: he plays in more events each season than both Day and McIlroy, he hits the ball farther than all of them, and the only major he's ever really performed well in in recent years is the Masters -- which he's won twice. If continues to manhandle Augusta National like only he can do, and actually perform well in the other majors, he could become one of the very few athletes who actually bows out on top.
